Spider Vein Treatment Q & A

What are spider veins?

Dark blue veins that cluster, spread, and look like webs under your skin are called spider veins. They’re mostly found on calves, ankles, behind your knees, and on your thighs, but can sometimes appear on your face.

Who gets spider veins?

Anybody can get spider veins, but your risk goes up if:

  • You’re pregnant
  • Over 50
  • Are overweight
  • Taking birth control pills
  • They run in the family
  • You stand a lot
  • Have an injury in the area

Other hormonal conditions, like menopause and puberty, can also cause spider veins to suddenly develop.

What is sclerotherapy?

Dr. Moammar treats your spider veins with sclerotherapy. The minimally invasive procedure is performed right in the office and requires no downtime

Once you’re comfortable and relaxed in your private room, you’ll elevate your legs slightly on a soft pillow while Dr. Moammar injects each of your spider veins with a saline solution. The chemicals in the solution irritate the lining of the vein and cause it to deflate and collapse. A clot forms and the veins slowly fade over the next four to six weeks.

How many treatments do I need?

Each sclerotherapy session takes about 30 minutes. Depending on the extent of your spider veins and where they are located, you may need several treatments. The knowledgeable aesthetics team at Legacy MD write a comprehensive treatment plan so you know what to expect.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

You may feel a pinch or a sting when Dr. Moammar places the needle into your spider veins, but it’s mild and well tolerated by most patients. Some people feel a warm sensation as the solution enters the vein, but it doesn’t hurt.

After the procedure, you may need to wear compression stockings for a few days if Dr. Moammar thinks it’ll be helpful. While the stockings are tight on your legs, there’s no pain involved and you can go about your normal activities.
